On Christmas Day of 1991, after a failed communist coup to retake control of the government against President Mikhail Gorbachev in August, as well as the recent declarations of independence from nations such as Ukraine and Russia and unpopular pro-capitalist actions, caused the Soviet Union to collapse and the remaining states becoming independent. This signaled the end of the Cold War, as America had achieved victory against the communists.
