Succeeding Washington, John Adams served a very tumultuous term as president beginning in 1797. A Federalist, Adams was unpopular in his handling of relations with France, angering many as he signed the Alien and Sedition Acts that discriminated against foreigners and violated Constitutional rights. Already rivals, Thomas Jefferson (a Republican) and Adams kicked off a very heated election. As a Republican, Jefferson was a proponent of more rights for the states. Jefferson ultimately won the election in 1800 after it had to be decided by the House of Representatives, and it had a great impact as being the first peaceful exchange of political parties in office through which it set precedent.
