Only July 2, 1776 the colonies took the plunge and formally declared their independence from Britain. This declaration was prompted by the need for the revolutionists to make clear their vision for the colonies and make their goal clear, as well as provide a morale boost for Americans. Drafted by Thomas Jefferson, the document was impactful not simply for its declaration, but also its ideas on social rights and equality that would become a foundation of the United States.
