Ulysses S. Grant's presidency brought new hope for American citizens fighting for recinstruction efforts. Under his rule, the Department of Justice and the office of Solicitor General were established, which aided greatly in the enforcement of the Fourteenth Amendment and protected African Americans more than ever. The first parts of his presidency encouraged reconstruction immensely.
