England had been officially Protestant under the rule of Edward VI and Catholic under the rule of Mary Tudor, so Elizabeth's subjects included both Catholics and Protestants. To ensure peace, she allowed Catholics and Protestants to live and worship in England. She was one of the first to legally promote religious tolerance.
