On this day, Christopher Columbus reached Central America. He mistakenly thought that this area was India even though the people dressed differently, grew different crops, etc. This discovery lured the Spanish towards not only Cuba and Hispaniola, but most of South and Central America. The Spaniards would later conquer and colonize the territory for its own benefit.
