Avery and his colleagues at Rockefeller University performed experiments pneumococcal cell capsule and it's role in infections.

By recognizing the importance of the findings of Frederick Griffith (conducting his experiments at the same time period), him and his team conducted experiments that identified the idea of the transforming principle: which suggested bacteria was capable of transferring genetic information through a process called transformation.

Now, we consider Oswald's (and Frederick's) experiments as definitive proof that DNA is indeed genetic material, although the teams results were overlooked at the time because proteins were still widely accepted as the hereditary material.
