De Gama was one of the most influential explorers of his time because his exploration around the horn of Africa to India opened way to numerous European powers colonizing/exploiting India (like the Dutch, the Portuguese, and the British). Furthermore, his exploration to multiple places in Africa was one of the first times Europeans interacted with the south and east side of that continent, parts of which would be subjugated by European powers for the next 300-400 years. He is more impactful than other explorers, Magellan for instance, because his visits had impacts on other cultures, as numerous wars would break out in India and atrocities would be committed that would never quite be forgotten by the Indians.
