Wyclif was one of the first to openly criticize the Catholic church in England and their ideals. He said that the church didn’t need manifold possessions or wealth and that people could find salvation outside of the church without their priests, merely by reading their Bible (which he also translated into English). He was a more impactful person than his contemporary William Langland, because Langland’s Lollards never accomplished anything or rose up, there was no class struggle in Britain (at least not for many centuries), whereas there would be a significant break with the Catholic church within England somewhat soon (by Henry VIII) and in some ways Wyclif foreshadowed this.
