In response to the high taxes and the religious differences between the netherlands and Spain angry mobs began to sweep through Catholic churches. Philip II had many executed, as many as 1500 in a day. This lead to an 11 year war which resulted in the Netherlands uniting and declaring their independence from Spain. The United Provinces of the Netherlands was a republic, it practiced religious tolerance and had not only the best banks but also many of the best artists in Europe as well.
