In response to large numbers of immigrants coming into the United States, John Quincy Adams wrote a letter as Secretary of State expressing his views. These views included that immigrants shouldn't expect any kind of government aid, and needed to make their way on their own. This was significant, because it demonstrated that Adams, alike to many Americans, placed more value on personal responsibility and liberty than any kind of public welfare or security.
