This compromise contains five laws. In 1849 California tried to enter as a free state which would disrupt the balance of slave and free states. In order for both sides to compromise Clay came up with a few changes. The Fugitive Slave Act was amended. Slave trade became prohibited in Washington D.C. California entered as a free state and a territorial government was created in Utah. To help even more a dispute in New Mexico and Texas was resolved. This Compromise led to the Civil War by strengthening the disparity between the North and the South.
