Dred Scott was a slave that lived with his owner in a free state for years and the moving back to a slave state. Due to his years in a slave state Scott brought to the court that he deserved to be emancipated. The court decided that blacks could not claim U.S. citizenship and therefore had no rights. This decision angered abolitionists and caused north and south tensions to run even higher.
