The Egyptians wanted to build a dam on the Nile river and they wanted to see which country would offer more aid, US or USSR. The US and Britain made offers but the US withdrew their offer resulting in an angry Egyptian nation deciding to take the Suez Canal as theirs. This caused the British, French, and Israeli to attack but were later told to stand down by the US after the USSR threatened nuclear warfare.
