1. Fugitive Slave Act - designed to spell out how fugitive slaves will be returned to their owners
2. Slave trade (but not slavery itself) banned in Washington, D.C.
3. Popular Sovereignty - people of each territory are the ones who decide if there will be slaves there or not
4. California enters the Union as a free state.


Fugitive Slave Act - federal magistrates in the northern states determined the status of runaway slaves; slaves were denied trial by jury and the right to testify; created opposition between the north and the south

Personal liberty law - added opposition FGA by claiming it violated states' sovereignty by interfering with legal affairs; movement of the north; northerners aided fugitive slaves and fought against the Act
