Smallpox first started to become a problem in Europe in the early 18th century. Edward Jenner, a talented doctor, collected data and experimented, with his research culminating into a successful smallpox vaccine. The spread of smallpox was diminished rapidly after he published his findings in 1798. With the absence of this deadly disease, the economic conditions improved and people were able to function on a more 'relaxed' day-to-day life, without fear of contracting it.
