The Battle of Bull Run transpired in Virginia, and it was the first major battle of the Civil War. Soldiers were sent down from Washington D.C. to a Confederate state. The two sides fought all day, and the proximity of the Southern troops to their bases allowed the South to defeat the North, shocking many Northerners and boosting the confidence and moral of the Southerners.
