New genes were discovered which are responsible for the expression of segments of an organism’s body from head to tail. A mutation of these hox genes could create a displacement of leg segments to grow from the pupils in insects, and potentially humans. This discovery showed how much change could be created just from mutations from a specific type of gene responsible for the placement of body parts.
