Samuel de Champlain was a French explorer who after a couple of trips prior to what is now the United States, is sent to land more northern to create a trading post. He and his ship of twenty eight men sailed down the St. Lawrence River and choose a spot in the valley on July 3, 1608.1 Today, Québec City is the name of this first colony but it was originally "named Kebec, an Algonquin word meaning place where the river narrows."2 Over two thirds of Champlain's crew members died within the first year and this is a meaningful moment in Canada's history simply because it was the Europeans first attempt at colonizing this far north and yet they persisted forward in adapting to the ruthless but plentiful landscape and environment after the borers vicious first year. Without this discovery by Champlain at that time in history, our nation could be smaller or possibly not even exist. It is an important commemoration in not only the history of Québec and Québec City but Canada as its colonization all began then and there.
