In the early third century, North African wines start to dominate after the rise to power of Septimius Severus in 193 C.E. The merchants of Roman Spain had supported his rival, Albius Clodius, so he encouraged investment in the region around his hometown, Lepcis Magna(modern Tripoli), and favored wines from there instead.(pg. 73)
