Union cavalry forces discover that Lee's men are moving west toward the Shenandoah Valley. The Confederates order an attack on the Union troops, battles take place all day, but the Confederates don’t force a breakthrough and the Union troops retire at the end of the day. This battle is known as the largest cavalry battle of the Civil War.
