Funded by Spain, Columbus sought a shorter, westward route to Asia. One that did not involve a long, dangerous sail around the tip of Africa. Instead, his four voyages led to the widespread knowledge of a New World existing between Europe and Asia. This led to extensive exploration and colonization of these lands by Spain and other European countries.
