The High Middle Ages or Early Middle or Middle Ages, followed by the Late Middle Ages. It is the period of the history of Europe and Middle East that extends from the fall of the Roman Empire of the West in the year 476 until approximately the year 1000, time of economic and cultural resurgence of the continent. It was a period in which three contemporary empires fought for supremacy: the Byzantine, the Islamic and the Carolingian.
