The Byzantine Empire was born as the Christian emperor, Constantine, declared it to be the new Rome. The empire managed to push back the attack of barbarian hordes, which destroyed the old Rome. However, since the rulers were all Christian, Jews suffered. Theodosius, the emperor of the Byzantine empire, prosecuted Jews because they rejected Jesus. Jews were not allowed to build new synagogues, hold any public offices and had to pay extra tax etc. However, Theodosius didn't have enough troops to regulate these acts. Jerusalem got to avoid the fate of old Rome. Jews also managed to keep their tradition even under such harsh treatments (History, Roman Emperor Timeline).
