The Townshend Act was a series of law that was passed by Parliament and placed on the colonists. This act suspended New York's assembly until the colonists in New York agreed to house British troops. This act placed taxes on items such as glass, paper, paint, lead, and tea and also gave British soldiers the right to search any house or business without the owner's permission. The Townshend Act caused the people in New York to be angry about their elected assembly being suspended, the colonists were also enraged about being taxed on even more products and about the writs of assistance. The writs of assistance allowed British troops to enter their property and the colonists believed that this went against what Enlightenment thinkers such as John Locke and Benjamin Franklin preached during the Enlightenment time period.
