After the War of Spanish Succession, one of the benefits England gained from Spain was the right to hold the monopoly on the slave trade with the Spanish colonies. The English crown immediately sold this contract to the British South Sea Company to manage the slave trade with the Spanish colonies for 30 years. This led to England soon overshadowing Portugal in the slave trading business.
