Austria blamed the Serbian government for the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, so they decalaed war on Serbia. Russia was allied with Serbia, but Germany did not believe that Russia would mobilise into the war, which then offered to support Austria if necessary. But Russia did mobilised and through their alliance with the French, called on France to Mobilise. Germany was apart of the Triple Alliance during WW1.
