The German's invade the Soviet Union in pursuit of Lebensraum for his people. Russia was chosen as the area to target due to the size of the nation and the Nationalistic idea that the Russian people were beneath the German master race. Additionally Russia could provide grain, oil and other resources needed to fuel the German War machine.
