The ancient Greek philosophers were the first people to think and make theory's about what matter is and what its made up of. Empedocles was the very first Greek philosopher to make a theory that all matter is made up of only four elements, earth, water, fire, and air. Empedocles didn't do many experiments but, he believed most of the myths in Greek mythology and that when matter was broken down it would be made up of one of the four elements. His theory was incorrect because the states of matter, liquids, solids and gases are due to the behavior of that atoms that make them up.
