1 jan 1969 ano - The Legacy: Leary v. United States and today

Descrição:

The constitutionality of the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 was challenged in the Supreme Court in 1969 during Leary v. United States. In this case, a psychologist named Timothy Leary (pictured) was arrested for the possession of marijuana. He challenged the act by saying it required self incrimination, which violated the 5th amendment. The next year, the act was repealed and replaced by the Controlled Substance Act, which completely banned the use of cannabis. Whether the effects of the act were positive or negative, depends on your view of cannabis. If you're pro marijuana, then this act had a negative effect. If you don't support marijuana, then this act made marijuana practically illegal and therefore had a positive effect.

Nowadays the effects of this act are everywhere. Since the act itself was repealed many decades ago, the literal act itself has no effect on our current events. But the legacy of the idea still surrounds us. This law was the first legal action that contributed to banning Marijuana and has since affected how society views the drug. Today, many states have begun to legalize medical marijuana use and some have legalized recreational use. In my news article, the marijuana industry's affect on Wall Street is analyzed.
