Most Americans were catholic at this time. The Know Nothing Party fear catholics and immigrants.
The know- nothing party’s goal was to make sure that immigrants couldn’t hold office. They didn’t want them to have a say in the government.
They feared that immigrants would take the jobs and land that America had to offer.
At this time, some people were mad at the democrats because they didn’t agree with their view on slavery. This caused many people to side with the know-nothing party, but at the same time, most people cared more about slavery than immigration.
