On the 19th June 1905 the first nickelodeon movie theatre opened in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. It was developed by showman Harry Davies and approximately 450 people attended.

Nickelodeons were mainly for the lower class as they were usually only 5 cents (a nicke¿l) and also usually a shop front turned into a cinema. They offered live acts and short films. By 1907 nickelodeons were the main outlet with around 2 million Americans going to one. However in 1910 they were replaced by larger modern theatres.

Nickelodeons were a huge part of tv and film history as it meant that the lower class could watch films. During that time period films were seen as for the lower class and people who acted in them weren't good enough for the stage shows. As time went on more people were going to nickelodeons emphasising their importance.
