USSR were afraid that the Islamic opposition could impact the Southern, more Muslim states of Russia. Within months, there were 100k Soviet troops stationed in the country.

USSR had two problems:
There was no Afghan Military, so the Soviets had to control all military actions themselves.
Babrak Kamal did not have the support of the Afghan people. They supported fundamentalist groups such as the mujahedin instead.

This resulted in the USSR spending vast amounts of money on transporting and sustaining their troops. Munitions, food, drink and equipment for almost 6 years!
