Eradication in 1979, first records were 3000 years ago in Egypt when the pharaoh has markings of the pocks on his skull. The first vaccine for it started in 1796 by Edward Jenner who created the cowpox.

By smallpox we also created two new words:

Variolation: Used to immunize an individual against smallpox. By introducing the patient to a more mild form of the disease they would then recover and become immune

Vaccination: It contains none of the smallpox virus. It's the inoculation against smallpox by using the less dangerous cowpox virus.
