On July 14, 1789, the prison called the Bastille was attacked by a mob of French revolutionaries. The prison was believed to be a representation of the dictatorial rule of the monarchy. Revolutionaries did not seize the building for the seven prisoners it held but for the weapons and ammo it kept.
