13 maio 2013 ano - "Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe" music video released
Descrição:
Kendrick Lamar starts the video with him sitting at a funeral in a church. He is later baptized before leading a celebration of life for the "Death of Molly" (the nickname for the harmful recreational psychoactive drug Methylenedioxymethamphetamine or MDMA). The entire album deals with the dangers of substance abuse especially the song "Swimming Pools" that addresses the dangers of drinking alcohol in excess.
"I am a sinner who's probably gonna sin again Lord forgive me" (Duckworth, 2012)
This line is a reference back to the opening of the album in the song "Sherane a.k.a Master Splinter's Daughter." It seems Kendrick has learned this prayer by heart and now at the beginning of the album uses it as a band-aid for his sins. When the album comes to its conclusion with "Sing about Me, I'm Dying of Thirst" we see that Kendrick has moved from using this as a band-aid and instead only utilizing it once he has truly repented... when he has reached the pinnacle of his thirst for baptism.
In analysis of the video's visuals, one of the most prominent uses is that of color. Often funerals are associated with black, whether it is in the clothes worn by mourners, the casket and even the hearse. However, in this video everything is bathed in white a symbol of new life and hope.
"I can feel the changes I can feel the new life, I always knew life can be dangerous." (Duckworth, 2012)
Though Lamar recognizes that life is a path of struggle, that is no reason not to celebrate that everyday can be the start of a new life. In the video is included a clip of a baptism, though this one is through alcohol instead of water. Though funerals and baptisms may seems contradictory, the baptism is a sign of new life as well. It is through his struggle with abuse--in this case alcholhol abuse--that he can be reborn in a baptism.
Romans 6:4 states:
"We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life." (NIV)
This passage reiterates that it is through death and struggle that we find life and glory.
Another visual symbol of this video is that of a golden field. Not only does the artist perform in the field, but the coffin is laid to rest in it at the end of the video. One connection to the Bible is that of the "promised land." In the book of Exodus, Moses and the Israelites are seeking a promised land filled with milk and honey. They only reach it after crossing the desert and surviving hardship and even death. "This image serves as the goal toward which the Israelites are moving. It is also a key element of the covenant" (McEntire and Emerson, 2006, p. 35-36) The ulitmate reward can only be attained after struggle and hardship.
