The chronophotographic gun was a camera invented by French physiologist Étienne-Jules Marey that was shaped like a rifle (hence the name) and could take 12 successive photographs per second which where imprinted on a rotating glass plate . The camera however wasn't meant for filming motion pictures but for taking photos of birds so that Marey could study their movement and how they fly.

Eventhough the camera wasn't orginally meant for film making it would be important to the advancment of it as the basic priciples of the camera would be built upon by other inventers such as William Dickson to create their motion picture cameras.
