Started the idea that matter was made up of four elements. These elements were, fire, water, air, and earth. Empedocles could have come up with this idea because if you take wood,"earth", and add fire, you will end up with smoke "air". This theory suggested that everything in the world was made up of either earth, fire, air, and water. There was as problem with this theory because there is so much that makes up matter and all different substances but it did also get people thinking more about matter.
