Union forces led by General William T. Sherman enter the city of Meridian in Mississippi after a successful month of fighting through the central part of Mississippi. This campaign was the Union’s first attempt at a total warfare, affecting not only the Confederate army, but also the people of the south. The town was important for the Union because of the industry and factories. The union could now support and supply their troops down south in Georgia and Mississippi.
