Cortes arrives in Mexico with 550 men, some horses, cannons and dogs in search of treasure and to imprison them and while his superior understanding of how to use his resources to fight, and the fact that he was hailed as a god by the Mayan leader, helped him to win, it is also the spread of diseases like smallpox and measles which the people there had never dealt with before that assisted in the destruction of the Mayan Empire.
