The 70's was a time for advancement.
The steadicam was invented by Garret Brown; this was a rig that placed the camera on the back, shoulders and chest on the cinematographer to achieve a smooth, tracking motion.
This was much more handheld than a Dolly, so the steadicam made it easier to capture a tracking shot where the camera was being shaken or manipulated.
