Bombing of the Basque town with a population of 7000 by Italian and German bomber and fighter aircrafts resulted in over 1500 people dead, and many more wounded.
27,000 kg of incendiary bombs were dropped, while German fighters strafed roads with people fleeing. It had little military significance, and simply more for a terror bombing.

It was used commonly as a propaganda by the Republicans, and was the first significant example of civilian bombing. Three days later, the Nationalists captured Guernica.
