Siddhartha Gautama, also known as The Buddha, is the founder of Buddhism. Coming from a royal family with a life free of suffering, Siddhartha was horrified when he found out that people in the world suffered. After this, he began a quest for enlightenment and came upon the idea that the primary goal of life should be to reduce suffering and that the only way to do that is to eliminate desire. After his enlightenment, the Buddha spread his teachings for decades until his death in 483 BC. Buddhism has gone through various changes and various versions of Buddhism have spawned since its creation, however, Buddhism is still widely practiced today. Furthermore, the Mauryan empire of India used Buddhist philosophies during Ashoka's rule. (2.1)(2.2)
