18 jul 1964 ano - New York Race Riots

Descrição:

The New York Race Riots of 1964 were the first in a series of devastating riots that tore through American cities between 1964 and 1965. The riots began in Harlem, New York following the shooting of fifteen-year-old James Powell by a white off-duty police officer on July 18, 1964. The white police officer was charged with police brutality causing an estimated 8 thousand Harlem residents took to the streets and launched a mass riot, breaking windows, setting fires and robbing and destroying local white businesses. The breakout of violence soon spread to the nearby neighbourhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant and continued for an entire six days, resulting in the death of 1 resident, over one hundred injuries, and more than 450 arrests. As the civil anarchy in New York City began to cool, several more riots arose upstate, in Rochester, New York. Like the Harlem Riot, the Rochester Riot developed from an alleged act of police brutality. For 3 dangerous days, violent protestors overturned automobiles, burned down buildings, and broke into stores causing over 1 million dollars worth of damages.
