On September 5, 2017, Wards most recent novel Sing, Unburied, Sing was published. It is about the journey of a drug-addicted black mother and her two children as they take a road trip to visit their white father in jail. This novel won Jesmyn Ward her second National Book Award and was on The New York Times "10 Best Books of 2017" list.

In the video, Ward talks about her inspirstion for on of the books main charecters, Jojo.
