From August 23- 31, 2005 Hurricane Katrina a category 5 hurricane struck the Gulf Coast causing extreme damages. Along with many other Americans, Ward's family fell victim to Hurricane Katrina. Their house in DeLisle flooded quickly and her family feared they would drown in the attic. They sought shelter at their local church, however, they never made it there and ended up stranded in a field full of tractors. The Ward's white landowners finally checked their property refused to offer shelter to the Ward's in their home. Ward's family finally received shelter from a white family that lived nearby. Her experience living through hurricane Katrina became the subject of her second novel "Salvage the Bones". It took Ward many years to begin writing "Salvage the Bones" because living through Hurricane Katrina was very traumatic for her.

The second picture shows destruction that took place in Ward's hometown in Mississippi. In the attached video Ward's discusses her experience during Hurricane Katrina and the impact it continues to have on her community.
