With the rise in blockbuster appeal, you would think that smaller, more amateur productions would fall off, however, this was not the case as many small studios realised that instead of trying to compete with the dominating big studios, it would be more beneficial to create their own sub-genre of smaller budget productions. Filmmakers such as the Weinstein brothers and Tarantino capitalised on this with hugely successful releases such as Pulp Fiction.
I think this is an important decade in film history as it demonstrated that bigger didn't always mean better and that using cutting edge technology was not the only way to create innovative styles of film, it was still in the hands of the creator.
