Before independence Columbia was called New Granada. New Granada was the last colony to be won over by the revolutionary forces led by Simon Bolivar and was the last to be freed from Spanish rule. New Granada then became known as Columbia or Gran Columbia, a republic of most of the newly independent colonies.
