Protectorate
Descrição:
Following their victory in the War of the Pacific, Chile establishes protectorates over the kingdoms of Raiatea, Huahine, and Bora Bora in 1884. The French and British had declared their guaranteed independence in the 1847 Jarnac Convention.
However, the French were occupied with Brazil and China and the British had revoked their guarantee from Chile in the Treaty of Santiageo [written shortly after the Treaty of Scarborough]. In it, the kingdom's guarantee of independence was ended in exchange for the northernmost Tuvalu Islands.
