On December 4, 1996, the Mars Pathfinder was launched to Mars, and it landed on July 4, 1997. The Pathfinder was a lander that dropped the first rover on Mars, named "Sojourner". This was a big step for NASA's landers because instead of using rockets to drop the rover, NASA chose to use air bags instead.
